The Highest Form of Self-Love

We are officially into Week 2 of the Mindset Reset, the August Affirmation Initiative and it's got me thinking a lot about COMMITMENT.

I am not taking about commitment in relationships, or flaking out on dinner plans with a friend. I am talking about committing to YOURSELF.

So let me ask you something…

How many times have you made a promise to yourself and broken it?

Personally, I've done it more times than I can count. But what I’ve realized is that whenever I break a promise to myself, it’s really breaking a promise to my Inner Child… which is a major bummer 🥺

Imagine breaking a promise to a little kid! How would that feel for you? But more importantly, how would that little kid feel TOWARD YOU after breaking promises?

They probably wouldn't trust you and a lack of trust in any relationship leads to worry, fear, and ANXIETY.

The same exact thing happens inside ourselves.

Furthermore, not following through sets-up a prime situation for the Inner Critic to have a field day with our self-esteem.

So the Mindset Reset, for me, is about shifting self-talk AND completing a commitment to myself.

Committing to ourselves help us feel EMPOWERED, CONFIDENT, and helps STRENGTHEN our Adult part and decrease anxiety from the Inner Child. It also chills out the Inner Critic and gives them less to complain about.

Bottom line,

Committing to yourself is the highest form of SELF-LOVE ❤️

Tips for Committing to Yourself:

  1. CHOOSE one, small activity to do daily (or 5x per week) and commit to that activity for 1 month. Dr. Nicole LePera, the @holisticpsychologist and author of How to Do The Work, suggests starting with drinking one glass of water first thing every morning. Others suggest making your bed everyday (this one has been a life changer for me). No matter what it is, choose a simple activity at the same time everyday and commit to it for one month and see how you feel. If you like it, stick with it.

  2. TRACK every time you do that activity to collect data to help with feeling accomplished. You can do this by marking it on a calendar, or using a tracking app. Again, whatever it is for you it doesn't really matter, as long as you're collecting data and seeing your progress.

  3. SHARE with a loved one about your commitment and perhaps ask them to check-in about how it's going. Using an accountability buddy helps us stay accountable to ourselves and others, which increases the chances of following through.
