My Conversation with a Hawk… (ok not a real one)
The other day, I walked out of my house and wandered into the backyard where I have this cozy little sitting space with a fire pit 🔥
Having an outdoor spot where I can be (mostly) alone is basically a requirement for me every time I move.
I do my best thinking outside.
That’s where I can sit quietly, listen to the birds, and really tune in.
Tune into what exactly?
Tune into myself, my intuition, God, the Universe, whatever you want to call it (because honestly, I’m still not sure what to call it).
Being outside helps me gain clarity, and I usually walk back inside with a completely new perspective.
So the other day, I sat down on my padded swinging loveseat and took a deep breath. And then I saw it.
A large red-shouldered hawk was sitting on the telephone wire about 30 feet in front of me.
Now, I technically live in a bird sanctuary, but I’ve only seen a handful of hawks in the year and a half I’ve been here—and never one this close.
She looked right at me and didn’t move.
For a solid five minutes, we just… existed together.
And the whole time, I knew exactly why she was there.
See, I’ve been wrestling with a decision lately, as we all do, and I had started drifting into that place of, “If I just don’t do anything, maybe the situation will magically work itself out.”
I literally had that thought as I walked outside.
But this hawk reminded me of something different.
According to the Wild Unknown Animal Spirit Deck by Kim Krans, hawks represent the bigger picture.
They fly high enough to see the full landscape but still have razor-sharp vision for what’s happening on the ground. They don’t get stuck in the weeds.
They hold perspective.
Which is exactly what I needed. I needed the reminder that my indecision wasn’t actually a choice—it was avoidance.
And the more I tuned into the bigger picture, the clearer everything became.
The truth was, I already knew the answer. I just wasn't ready to admit it.
But this moment with the hawk was a gentle nudge that I can see the bigger picture, and from that place, it’s safe to make a choice.
So right there, sitting under the trees with my new hawk friend, I committed to having the uncomfortable conversation I’d been avoiding.
And I did.
And it worked out more beautifully than I could have ever imagined 🥰
So think of me as your own personal hawk today, swooping down to remind you to expand your perspective so you can see the bigger picture, too.
What are you ignoring?
What are you pretending not to know?
And when it comes down to it… can you muster the courage to do the thing you already know is best for the whole?
Because when we act from alignment, that’s when life really starts to flow 💜
