Welcome to Everything Makes Perfect Sense! (My Substack)
Even though I’m now a published author, nothing quite says “you’re a real writer” like starting a Substack.
I finally feel legit 😆
But seriously, I am excited to try out this new platform and bring my writing here.
Why Everything Makes Perfect Sense?
As someone who thought she was crazy until I was 22 years old, the simple phrase of “everything makes perfect sense” changed my life in so many ways.
So much so that I used it as the title of my memoir: Everything Makes Perfect Sense: A Young Woman’s Journey to Healing and Forgiveness.
Here’s a picture of the moment I held the first copy of my book – tear. It was only a few months ago, so I’m still riding that high.
So, at this point, you might be a little confused, because yes, I get it, not EVERYTHING makes perfect sense all the time, but in my life it actually does.
Let me explain.
When I was a senior in college I was deep in my trauma without even knowing it. I was sick all the time, had constant headaches, migraines, and was hypoglycemic. I partied a lot, was addicted to weed, had intense mood swings and explosive anger rooted in anxiety and PTSD.
I was also a high-achieving athlete earning a double major, holding down a part-time job, in a long term relationship and was the captain of my sports team headed for Nationals.
So, based on all the chaos I created in my life, and all the depression and self-loathing from my teenage years, I just thought I was crazy.
Until one day, after another drunken outburst I don’t remember, my boyfriend told me if I didn’t get some help, he was out.
And that’s when I started my healing journey. Although, I didn’t know it at the time. At the time, I signed up for a program that I thought would fix all my problems, take away my anger and make me act like a normal human being, all in 8 days.
Little did I know, however, it would be the start of a life long obsession with mental, physical and spiritual health.
During that 8-day program, I met Daniel (name changed for privacy). He was my dad’s age and also dealt with an traumatic childhood and was working on a PhD in Psychology. Daniel was kind and gentle but he didn’t hold back either. Every time I mentioned a pattern I had, or the way I was feeling, he asked the same question,
“Given everything you’ve been through in life, why does that make perfect sense?”
He knew I’d experienced emotional, physical and sexual abuse in my home growing up and to him it was obvious. The outbursts, the substance abuse, the shutting down, the emotional dysregulation– everything made perfect sense.
So Everything Makes Perfect Sense became my guiding statement. The phrase I go back to over and over again when I’m confused, need perspective or just want to help myself feel a little better.
And now my therapy clients use the phrase and quote me, just like I quote Daniel.
Life Today
As a licensed trauma therapist, author, speaker and astrologer, it’s my mission to help survivors of all kinds understand how the past directly influences who we are today.
And while you can’t change the past, you can heal and move forward with tools that help you live the life you want, not the life that was handed to you.
Once we understand that everything we do makes perfect sense, we shift from blame and shame to compassion, acceptance and empathy.
It is from those places that real change occurs.
So when it comes to this Substack, what you’ll find is real, empowered talk about mental, physical and spiritual health and how it’s all connected.
As I tell my therapy clients when we start working together:
I’m an active, direct therapist who has a lot of tools in my magic bag and it’s my goal to teach you those tools so you feel equipped to handle whatever life throws at you.
In light of being real and direct, here are my 10 guiding principles.
10 Guiding Principles:
Everything we do makes perfect sense in the context of your life and your soul’s journey.
Trauma is the root of most human suffering and mental health symptoms. Therefore healing the wounds created by trauma, heals our symptoms.
We are spiritual beings having a human experience and the trauma we’ve experienced is a part of the spiritual experience.
Understanding your astrology chart is a cheat code for self-awareness. Learning to incorporate it as a tool for personal growth, is a cheat code for life.
Learning to befriend your Inner Critic, soothe your Inner Child, and strengthen your Adult-self will drastically improve all aspects of your health.
The core beliefs that we learned about ourselves and the world can be released, rewritten and replaced with positive core beliefs that will improve your life.
Forgiveness is a non-religious, empowering process of releasing and letting go that is for the person who’s been harmed and no one else.
Taking a whole-you approach to healing is vital because our mental, physical and spiritual health because they are all connected.
Talk therapy only goes so far and is often slow. Somatic work, nervous system regulation, energy work, breath work, tapping, meditation, mindfulness, etc. are all tools that help support your healing journey more fully.
What happened to us is 100% not our fault and we are 100% responsible for how we show up today.
If we’re on the same page, fantastic! I hope you subscribe and stick around. If we differ in some areas, you’re absolutely still welcome, as long as it feels good for you.
Thanks for reading this far.
Stay loving 💜
