How Do You Make Hard Choices?
One year ago my life changed dramatically. I said yes to the adventure of a lifetime; living on the road, in a 22 foot long Sprinter van with my partner.
And this weekend, on the one year anniversary of this journey, things changed.
We made a new choice.
One that is scary, unsure and empowering.
Sometimes in life we have to make choices that don’t make sense, don’t feel good, or are incredibly hard.
That’s what being an Adult is all about.
Big choices can be confusing if the different parts of ourselves are screaming different thoughts, feelings and ideas.
Maybe there’s one inner voice that is mad, and another that's excited!
Maybe one part is scared and worried, while another understands that everything will be ok.
It’s confusing when everyone in your head talks at once!
And that’s why I love the PAC model.
The Parent, Adult, Child (PAC) model explains the five voices in our heads.
This model has helped make sense of my internal chaos over the past 10 years.
And, it’s how I help my clients.
I teach people this model so they can understand themselves, and therefore their choices, better. Through this work we heal the parts and, therefore heal ourselves, more fully. So, if you have a big choice in your life try this…
JOURNAL WITH THE PAC MODEL
Download the PAC model here.
Write the name of one part at the top of the paper.
Close your eyes for a moment and connect with that part of yourself.
Write directly from that part, letting them say everything they want about the situation.
Repeat for each part.
Conclude with the Adult after hearing from everyone else.
Best of luck to you in all your big decisions!
